I’m not allowing HAL9000. Technically, he’s a computer, not a robot. If he was in there, then Bomb 20 from John Carpenter’s Dark Star would be in there too. Maybe a sentient computers list needs to follow.

I am allowing androids. Roy Batty, Cherry, Ash and Arnie all count as robots.

I am not allowing TV robots, animated robots or Walt Disney film robots.

I didn’t include Yul Brynner’s Cowboy robot from Westworld. Or any Transformers. Or the 2nd Terminator who can turn into shiny goo. I can live with that.

Bob and Vincent from the truly great “black hole” could perhaps feature?

A lot of people said Maximilian to me in conversation today. But the problem with Black Hole was that the bad guys had the worst aim of any movie of all time ever – and that put me off liking anything about it. Even BOB. Oh, except the theme – that was ace.
